A few weeks ago, I was sitting in a dentist’s chair in the United States when I heard something that immediately made my stomach tighten:
“The tooth is cracked. It needs to be removed. You’ll need an implant.”
The estimate for the extraction and implant process was around $6,000.
Not only that, the timeline would be roughly six months from start to finish — extraction, healing, implant placement, more healing, and then finally the crown.
It felt overwhelming.
And honestly, I had a lot of anxiety about the whole thing.
Because I spend a significant amount of time in Bangkok, I decided to explore additional opinions while I was still at home in the U.S.
From my armchair office, I reached out to three highly reviewed dental clinics in Bangkok to ask about my situation and pricing. All three responded, which already impressed me.
Once I arrived in Thailand, I met with two of the clinics in person.
The experiences were different. One clinic didn’t give me the confidence I was looking for, and I ultimately decided not to move forward there.
The clinic I chose was BIDC (Bangkok International Dental Center).
It felt more structured and clinical — almost hospital-like — compared to the smaller office. That actually reassured me that they were used to handling complex cases and international patients.
What mattered most, though, was the dentist.
She was kind, patient, and very informative. She took time to explain what she was seeing and what the options were.
And then she said something I wasn’t expecting:
“We can probably save this tooth with a crown, maybe without a root canal.”
Save it.
No extraction.
No implant.
That alone changed everything.
The Treatment Experience — Much Easier Than I Expected
Today I had the tooth prepared and received a temporary crown. The permanent crown goes on tomorrow.
Here’s what surprised me the most so far:
I had built up a lot of fear in my head about the procedure.
Dental work makes a lot of people nervous — and I’m definitely one of them.
But the reality?
It was nearly painless.
Modern numbing works extremely well, and the process was far easier than I imagined. Most of the discomfort was psychological beforehand, not physical during.
That was a huge relief.
The Cost Difference
United States estimate:
- Extraction + implant + crown: about $6,000
- Timeline: about 6 months
Bangkok treatment (so far):
- Crown to save the tooth: about $700 total
- Timeline: 2 days
That difference is hard to ignore.
Now, I want to be clear — this isn’t about saying one country is better than another. Dentistry is complicated, and every situation is different. Sometimes implants truly are necessary.
But one lesson is already obvious:
Getting another opinion can change everything.
Anxiety vs Reality
One thing I want to say honestly — because I think it will help other people — is that I had real anxiety going into this.
The anticipation was worse than the experience.
If you’ve ever put off dental work because of fear, I completely understand. I’ve been there.
So far, though, the process has been far easier than what I imagined in my head.
The Bigger Lesson (So Far)
At this point, I’m relieved… and honestly a little amazed that a tooth I thought I was going to lose might actually be saved.
Saving your natural tooth — when possible — is almost always preferable to removing it.
And sometimes the path to that outcome isn’t obvious until you explore more than one option.
