Embarking on my swimming journey as an adult four years ago, I never imagined it would become a source of solace and tranquility. In this blog post, I share my evolution as a self-taught distance swimmer and my quest for the perfect destination for open water swimming. From the initial fitness goals to the therapeutic nature of swimming after a loss, this is a narrative of finding serenity through strokes.
Discovering the Joy of Swimming: My foray into swimming began with the simple aim of fitness and weight loss. Little did I know that the pool would become a sanctuary, a place where the chaos of the real world could be momentarily tuned out. The 800-meter swims, done 1-4 times a week, became more than a workout—they transformed into a meditative practice.
Palawan: A Swim Haven in the Philippines: After experiencing the profound impact of swimming on my well-being, the desire for an open water swimming retreat took root. Palawan, an archipelago in the Philippines, emerged as a highly recommended destination. Although Bali was on my bucket list, the captivating Google images of Palawan made it the ‘right place’ for my aquatic adventure.
Cebu: A Prelude to Coron: Choosing Cebu as my first stop, I enjoyed daily swims in the hotel pool, setting the tone for the aquatic exploration that awaited. The last-minute availability of non-stop flights to Cebu proved economical and convenient, ensuring a stress-free journey. As a solo traveler with a whole row to myself on the plane, the stage was set for a transformative experience.
Open Water Serenity in Coron and El Nido: Arriving at Coron island, my open water swim adventure unfolded against the backdrop of stunning landscapes. The crystal-clear waters and untouched beauty of Coron provided the perfect canvas for my aquatic endeavors. Each stroke became a form of therapy, a means to navigate life difficulties in the embrace of nature.
This journey is a testament to the power of finding solace in an activity that resonates with your soul. Whether it’s swimming, hiking, or any other pursuit, there exists a perfect destination where you can focus on yourself and work through life’s challenges. As I continue to explore the open waters, I invite you to discover your own sanctuary and embark on a transformative journey of self-discovery.
And yes, I often use a swim snorkel!
